Ministers Wives History

HISTORY Part I
Missionary Dorothy E. Crumes, inspired by God, organized the National Ministers' Wives in October 1956, in Omaha, Nebraska during the National Convention. Chartered members wereDorothy Crumes; Etta Scott, wife of 4th Chief Bishop F.C. Scott; Emma Jean Collins; and Choltile Coleman. Dorothy E. Crumes was the first president of the National Ministers' Wives, holding the office for 50 years. From this National Ministers' Wives body, District Ministers' Wives organizations were developed. Missionary Crumes often included the 'Ministers' Wife' poem in the Luncheon Program. 

Missionary Dorothy Crumes established the National Ministers' Wives Breakfast which later led to the development of the National Ministers' Wives Luncheon. At each National Convention the Ministers' Wives Luncheon continues to flourish from its humble beginning to the present day. District Ministers' Wives were selected as the luncheon speakers with her words of invitation "Sister________, I have something for you to do". Missionary Crumes penned the Ministers' Wives Motto, "Deeper Love, Closer Fellowship". Her favorite flower, the Rose, was often utilized for centerpieces and corsages. Pink, her favorite color, was often the color of the luncheon programs. Missionary Crumes message in the 48th Luncheon program penned the Ministers' Wives Prayer. The standing Committee that helped Missionary Crumes with the annual luncheon was: Yvonne Hubbard, Joann Williams, Jacqueline Robbins, and Kathy Shannon.

As president of the National Minister's Wives, Missionary Crumes demonstrated admirable characteristics by always being punctual, orderly, organized, discrete, trusting and generous. Missionary Dorothy Crumes wanted Ministers' Wives to be their Godly-Best at all times. Missionary Dorothy Crumes often spoke of the foundation laid by Ministers' Wives who are no longer with us: Missionary Etta Scott, Counselor, Bessie Overton. Emma Jean Collins, Evangelist P A Dixon, Past Treasurer, Chlotile Coleman, Past Vice President, Missionary Willie Mason, Ollie Bryant, Sis. E. Spurlock, Fannie Overton, Missionary Dollie Moss, Vera lee Tyree, Maxine Jones, Annie Lee McMillan, Cora McDaniels, Rosie Stone, Garvis Crawford, Dolly Moss, Paniest and Chapalin, Eliza Lewis, Irene Morgan, LaVerne Ayers, Inez Ellison, L.V. Peniger, Melinda Brown, Sis. Hill, Dora Hawkins, Past Secretary, Sis. Murphy, Rosie Jemison, Reoma Samuae, Ada Musgrove, Ruby Irish, Anna Hall Whitney, Cora Gibson, Sis. Higgs, Delora Barton, Past Pianist, M. Murray, Past Assistant Pianist, Cozell Bowie, Mrs. Bobbie Hall, Safronia Russell, H. L. Hawthorne, Viola Watson, Shirley Nichols, Mary L. Spicer, Deloris Lane, Elizabeth Gresham, Ophelia Presberry, Cleo Pryor, Sis. Agee, Olia Pittman, Mary Banks, Yvonne Hubbard, Past Treasurer, Charlene McCoy, Ann Whitaker, Celeste Nichols, Sue Ann Travis, Mary Helen Piggs, Lean Hicks, Christine Ponder, Gracie Morgan, Mary Powell.

The first portion of the history of the National Ministers' Wives was written by Sister Barbara Hendricks in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the National Ministers' Wives held on August 3, 2007. The officers were: Sister Barbara J. Hendricks, President; Evangelist Bessie Lewis, Secretary, Sister Marjorie Hines, Treasurer.

Those serving as officers in later years include:  Evangelist Bessie Lewis as Secretary; Marjorie Hines as Treasurer.
